Edwin Michielsen is a scholar of modern Japanese and East Asian literature and culture. His work examines proletarian cultural movements, international solidarity, anti-imperialism and the intersections of culture, politics and social movements across linguistic and national boundaries.

Modern and contemporary Japanese and East Asian literature; proletarian and marginalised literatures; transnational studies; labour and solidarity; critical theory.
